Everyone knows that a fast metabolism leads to fast weight loss. But stress, poor eating habits, a busy lifestyle, lack of exercise and age all come together to drag that metabolism down and helping you to pack on your pounds. Even if you are making every effort to do the right thing for your health and eat right, you may not be able to shift the pounds. Diet pills claim they can light a fire under your metabolism, and they may be able to do so in the short term, but in the long run you’ll end up right back where you started. Plus, diet aids can make you jittery, disrupt your sleep and leave you feeling nauseous. It may seem like you are doomed to diet failure, but don’t write success off so fast. There are natural ways you wake up your sleepy metabolism and get healthy without following fad diets or taking any pills. If a fast metabolism is your goal, give these metabolism “call to action” plans a try:

First and foremost, if you want a fast metabolism, you have to give it the fuel it needs. In other words, you need to eat. That may sound counter intuitive to you when you are dieting. After all, you know that if you restrict calories in an extreme way, you start feeling like you’re losing inches quickly. Well, you may be. But those inches are water and will comes back when you start eating normally again, and your starved metabolism will be moving along even slower than when you started your diet. Don’t deprive your metabolism. If you don’t eat at regular intervals, your metabolism will go into survival mode and will start keeping all of the calories you eat as fat in case you don’t feed it in the future. Further, it won’t burn any of the fat it has stored because it will be saving it for when it really needs it. Eating regularly will tell your metabolism that you’ve got the food supply under control so burning fat is OK. Don’t eat less than 12 calories for every pound of your weight – less than that will force your metabolism to save fat for a rainy day.

Next, build up your muscles. Every bit of muscle you have in your body increases the caloric burning capacity of your metabolism by at least 50 calories an hour. Build up enough muscle, and you’ll find you can eat a lot more without gaining weight. If you don’t want the body builder look, you can increase muscle with light weights without getting bulging biceps.

Last but not least, don’t forget to move. You don’t have to spend hours a day on the treadmill, or even 20 minutes a day. Most experts agree that if you exercise ten minutes per day at full capacity – meaning you’re feeling exhausted afterwards – you’ve given your metabolism the best boost around. If ten minutes is a push, split it up. Your metabolism will feel the burn no matter if you do ten minutes straight or ten, one minute sessions.
