Tennis Elbow:
Tennis elbow is a lateral elbow pain which stems from overuse of arm, due to excessive activity like overburdening the wrist extensor or the outer forearm. This causes high burning sensation along the outer part of the elbow. This is of a repetitive type of injury caused by overuse of proximal forearm muscles in the body. These injuries occur due to prolonged loads on muscles and tendons. Tennis elbow can also emerge from faulty body mechanics and incorrect postures at work or play. The appropriate term in medical science is lateral epicondylitis. The lateral epicondyle is the outer boney protuberance of the upper arm bone called the humerus.
Backhand tennis elbow:
In most typical cases of tennis elbow, the pain is caused due to defective gripping activity and moving heavy objects. The backhand tennis elbow is a result of faulty techniques employed in a tennis play. This causes the disorder worsening while using the arm, which lessens with the rest. In tennis play the backhand action is a significant movement more common than forehand. While imparting the training one is told to turn the shoulders more along with hips leaning towards the ball, lifting legs, stepping ahead near the net post and rotate the back hip. Then, one is asked to straighten the arm and extend it for hitting out in front. In the backhand action the arm works in a reverse direction as against the forehand. With this action of one’s backhand the forearm flexes laterally around the biceps and elbow, a reverse way from the forehand. Hence, it is necessary for the tennis players to remain flexible for retaining leverage.
The Physical Therapy in backhand tennis elbow:
The physical therapy includes home exercise programs for stretching and strengthening the forearm. A physical therapist sometimes uses special equipments like the electrical stimulation, ice packs or ultrasound for helping reduce pain and enhancing healing process. Different types of exercises and techniques are recommended for resolving pain and dysfunction of tennis elbow. The joint mobilization techniques are also used for correcting faulty elbow joints. In backhand tennis elbow sports-specific training is advised in order to rectify improper backhand swing techniques. One is also trained with the proper techniques and corrective measures to be practiced during his play. Some of the supporting products like neoprene elbow supports with special pressure pads are sometimes used to provide compression. This can also help one in managing day-to-day activities with less amount of pain. However, for complete recovery through physical therapy, inclusion of corrective movement system is most essential.
