The first goal of radiation therapy is to cure or minimize early stage of the cancer disease after diagnosing it. In some cases, cancers seem to be very sensitive to radiations. Therefore, the main role of these radiations in such cases to reduce these cancer cells in size or fade away it completely. In some cancer cases, these radiations are used before the surgery to reduce the size of the tumor through the pre-operative radiation therapy. After surgery, these radiations are used to stop such cancer from shaping through adjuvant radiation therapy.

The goals of the radiation therapy consist of other forms of radiation therapy like chemotherapy. In other forms, the plan of the radiation therapy is managed with the patient between the surgeon, medical oncologist, and radiation oncologist.

The avoidance of the cancer cells from its emergence in another part of the body is a part of goals of the radiation therapy. In cancer disease, its name already clarifies that which body organ is affected by the cancer cells. However, in some cases, he also considers the low affected area of cancer even though CT scan and MRI scan shows no cancer tumors. The main goal behind is that doctor never want to grow these cancer cells rapidly in such low affected body organ. For instance, the goals of radiation therapy in particular lungs cancer is to generate prophylactic radiations referred as preventive radiations to the head part of the body. This preventive radiation is used to prevent such lungs cancer from spreading to the brain.

One of the goals of radiation therapy is to diagnose and cure symptoms for complex cancer. In some cancer cases, the cancer cells are spread so rapidly that it seems to be very critical to prevent and cure. However, the advanced radiation therapy can makes such patient relieved from its unbearable symptoms like pain, trouble swallowing or breathing. This type of radiation is called as palliative radiation, which makes patients free from symptoms like bowel problems of advanced stage cancer.

The goals of radiation therapy have been differentiated according to the type of the cancer. The main goal of this radiotherapy is to destroy the cancer cells with X-rays of high energy. In case of blood cancers, the goal of radiation therapy is to destroy the cancer tissue under treatment.
