Introduction to Tendons

A Tendon is a tough band of tissue which connects the muscles to the bones. The skeleton muscles in the body make the bones move. This movement enables the person to walk, jump, lift or move around. Tendons are very much important for the body to move, so it has to be kept strong, healthy and harmful. Tendons are made of special cells called tenocytes, water and fibrous collagen proteins. Millions of these collagen proteins weave together to form the strong strand of flexible tissue called tendons. Tendons grow into the bone and form a tough mineralized connection, to create a permanent bond that is extremely tough to break. In spite of the strength, tendons can be damaged if overstrained or overused.

Epicondylitis

The elbow is capable of moving into two directions bending and straightening. Due to this reason it consists of one upper arm bone and two forearm bones. There are four muscles group that are important to the elbow. Triceps in the back, biceps in the front, muscles helping the wrist and fingers to extend outside and the muscles helping the wrist and fingers to extend inside. Inflammation of the tendon tissue is the most common condition affecting the elbow. Tennis players often suffer tennis elbow epicondylitis, as a result of pressure grip strain or due to backhand shots performed. Epicondylitis of the elbow involves pathological alteration in the musculotendinous origins at the lateral epicondyle or the tennis elbow. Epicondylitis mostly affects the dominant arm. Symptoms of epicondylitis may occur suddenly or may develop gradually. The diagnosis of epicondylitis is usually based upon an examination and symptoms of pain over the affected epicondyle.

Inflammation of the Tendons or Tendonitis

When a tendon gets inflamed by a variety of reasons and the action of pulling the muscles becomes painful is called tendonitis or the inflammation of the tendons. Generally this is caused due to chronic overuse. Even among the people who are aged, the tendons loosen up its elasticity. These people are prone to develop symptoms of tendonitis. Sometimes if the tendon does not have a smooth path to glide along it will be more likely to become irritated and inflamed. Tendonitis can be felt in the wrists, kneecaps as well as rotator cuff.
