The ultra sound images that are used in the sonography are very highly energetic and therefore no one should be exposed to them for a long time. However, the sonographers have to work with these, for a long time. Therefore, there are some risk factors for sonographers, and those associated with the practice of sonography.
As the sonographers have to work with the ultrasound waves, these waves also enter their own body. These are energetic enough to affect the tissues and the internal metabolic activities of the body. Consequently, the sonographers regularly experience the problems as the mental fatigue and tiring of the body.
In addition to these simple problems, there are some other risk factors for sonographers as musculoskeletal disorders, which can include the inflammations, related to the tendons or the tendon sheaths, and occurrence of bursitis.
Besides this, using the sonographic equipments is a job involving physical stress. Thus, they get tired because of this. The risk factors for sonographers are particularly involved if, they are using the wrong methods during the process of sonography. Holding the transducers for a long time with the hands puts pressure on the muscles, and the tissues of the hands and shoulders. Therefore, this can cause temporary pain or other problems with the tissues, in this region.
In addition to this, they have to put pressure on the back and thus reach the different parts of the patient’s body. This affects the back and hence it may pain or after a long practice of sonography, this will also affect their posture. Standing for a long time causes similar affects on the legs.
The risk factors for sonographers are also associated with the problems that can occur by means of the physical stress on the body. These include the problems with the shoulders, neck, wrist, back, hands, occurring frequently, in the same order.
The heavy load of work also affects the mental state of the sonographers. This is because they have to handle the equipments and in addition to this, they need to have good communication with the patients for getting their cooperation. Due to these responsibilities, they face mental stress.
However, these risk factors for sonographer are reducible. For this, the sonographers are generally trained so that, they can maintain their own health too. These risk factors for sonographers arise only when they use the wrong methods while practicing the sonography. Therefore, they can avoid these problems just by following the correct and safe methods, which are taught to them, during the training.
