When it comes to diet and exercise, do you think your metabolism has one up on you? After all, your metabolism has the final say in how many calories you get burned, and its inner workings are essentially pretty mysterious. You feel like you’re doing everything you can to lose weight, and still your pants aren’t getting any looser, so what gives? If you think that your metabolism is playing a little trick on you, holding on to that weight you want so desperately to get rid of, it’s time to fight back. These sneaky little tricks will get your metabolism working harder, and you’ll barely even notice them in your daily schedule. What you will notice, however, is that the scale is finally going down and you have gotten the upper hand in your battle with your metabolism.

The first trick couldn’t be easier. If you’re on a diet, then surely you are drinking lots of water already. After all, diet experts recommend getting at least 64 ounces a day when you’re trying to shed pounds (and if you’re not getting that, then start by adding water to your plan, because nothing shuts down a metabolism like dehydration). But, assuming you’re already drinking that water, here’s your first simple, sneaky little trick – add ice. Yep, that’s right, adding ice to the water you are already drinking could increase your metabolism by as much as 30%! Getting an extra 30% calorie burning for some ice cubes is a pretty amazing way to get a handle on your metabolism. This works because your body has to work hard to warm up after that big injection of cold. Keep it frosty and watch the pounds melt away.

Sneaky tip number two involves getting spicy. Since you’re already drinking all of that ice water anyway, why not add a little heat to your food? Crushed red peppers and hot sauce raise your body temperature in such a way that your metabolism has to work to get things cooled down. Don’t worry about your ice water and hot peppers cancelling each other out. Hitting your body with one after the other again and again will only get things cooking more.

Sneaky tip three? Try turning your snacks into a workout. By eating certain foods, called negative calorie foods, you can actually burn more calories eating than are actually in the food itself. By eating blueberries, grapefruit, asparagus, carrots and other high fiber, low cal fruits and veggies, snack time can be a workout for more than your mouth as your body scrambled to break down all of that fiber. A calorie deficit after a yummy snack – does it get any better than that.

With these three little dieting tricks, you can make your metabolism work harder for you without having to do anything terrible strenuous yourself. Stop letting your metabolism cling on to fat at will and chug along at a snail’s pace. Show it who is boss and make it snap into action so you can lose that weight once and for all.
