Tennis Elbow is a condition where painful inflammation of the tendons occurs at the border of the elbow caused by the overuse of lower arm muscles. It is most commonly seen in the tennis players and hence, the name. The people who do a lot of work involving lifting at the elbow joint are the main targets of this disorder. Tennis elbow is a repetitive stress injury that occurs when muscles and tendons are torn or damaged. Another cause may be a partial tear of the tendon fibers, which connect muscle to bone. Repeated twisting hand, wrist or forearm movements done during the daily activities are the main reasons for the cause of tennis elbow. In general, it appears in the age of 40 to 60 and most commonly seen at the age of 40. Tennis Elbow is also called Lateral Epycondylitis. The individuals who are involved in sports such as golf, swimming, baseball and fencing are also at the risk of getting tennis elbow. The main symptom is pain tenderness and sometimes swelling of the elbow and forearm on the affected area. Treatment is given to reduce the pain and inflammation. The treatment involves applying heat or ice on the affected areas.
Tennis Elbow Tendonitis
Tendons are fibrous tough cords connecting the muscles to bones. The entire human body has got these tendons. When these tendons got inflamed and irritated, the situation is called the Tendonitis. It can be easily treated and cured. Common causes include repetitive strain on the tendon, due to aging, without proper training techniques and exercise forms putting too much strain ob the tendons, result of joint injuries, disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis or diabetes, thermal injuries found in the people such as mountain climbers, rock climbers and hikers and anatomy of the tendon.
Symptoms and Treatment
Common symptoms include pain, difficulty in moving the hand, burning sensation around the affected area, the swelling and reddening. These symptoms are especially observed at the time of lifting weights, playing tennis or during other strenuous activities. Self help remedies include stopping the activities that have caused the pain, taking adequate rest, protecting the affected areas using braces and applying anti-inflammatory medication to the area. Other treatments may include, massage therapy, ultrasound treatment and tendonitis surgery in severe cases.
