The treatment of tendonitis usually involves two basic areas including resting the area and rebuilding the affected area. If you treat the tendonitis properly with rest and by rebuilding the affected area than you should be able to feel relief and be able to regain use of the affected body part within a 3 week period of time. The healing process will continue and you will be fully recovered in about 6 weeks. You will experience the formation of scar tissue during this repair period and in some cases the scar tissue will continue to form for as much as up to one year after the treatment as begun.
Usually those with tendonitis are anxious to get back to normal activity level and are impatient about the healing process. You must give sufficient time for your tendonitis to heal. Sometimes treatment must be geared towards the body part that has been affected. You should remember that if home treatment of tendonitis does not yield results within 3 weeks you should seek the advice of a medical doctor. If you are in severe pain and unable to have mobility in a joint, you should seek medical attention.
There are several self-help treatments that can be done at home when tendonitis strikes.
The first step in treating tendonitis at home is to stop the activity that you were doing that caused the tendonitis. Such as if you notice pain upon serving while playing tennis than you should stop playing tennis until the tendonitis is completely healed (approximately 6 weeks). This may include more than one activity that needs to be stopped. Complete rest for a minimum of three weeks will be required after that slow activity can help to strengthen the area.
Rest is the most important part of the treatment of tendonitis. Rest alone can completely heal tendonitis.
Sometimes bracing the affected area can help the tendon to heal. Bracing can help to prevent future strain and inflammation of the area. There are many commercially manufactured braces such as wrist braces, arm slings, and knee braces.
Inflammation is a common symptom for tendonitis and applying anti-inflammatory medication to the affected area can help to relieve this symptom of tendonitis. It can also help to reduce the pain by reducing the dilation of blood vessels.
After 3 weeks of resting the affected area it is time to make a re-evaluation of the tendonitis to see how it has healed. If you have been resting the area you should see some improvements in the symptoms. The pain should be subsided and the area should feel more normal. You should be able to apply some light resistance, stretching and movement of the affected joint (muscles and bone). Make sure that the movement is slow and controlled. If you do not feel any return of pain, you can add light weights to help build up strength and improve flexibility to the area. Do some gentle stretching. If all is fine, you can start doing some light exercising. Be sure to ease slowly back into normal level of activity. This time be sure that you properly warm up your muscles before exercising, working at a repetitive task, or before participating in sports. Make sure that you cool down too.
You can use support braces to prevent further injury when movement needs to continue. There are braces for your ankle, knee, elbow, heel, neck and wrist.
Massage therapy, ultrasound treatment, and surgery may be needed if the pain and other symptoms do not subside after home remedy.
