Liposuction is a method of removing excess body fat by suction using surgical equipments. It is a cosmetic surgery. It is also called by the names lipoplasty, liposculpture and suction lipectomy. Exercising and diet control methods can help to reduce the fat content up to some extent from body but are not useful for long-term effect. Liposuction techniques are a solution for such situations. Liposuction is not a weight-loss exercising method. Instead, it is a kind of body contouring. The amount of fat removed using this method depends on the physician, removal techniques and patient. The average amount of fat that one can lose is 10 pounds. Liposuction is generally done by a professional plastic surgeon. It helps to shape up the body.
More on Liposuction
The undergoing person should be average or just above average weight. He should have good health and have rigid elastic skin and should not be more than 20 pounds overweight. The fatty areas, which do not respond to the exercise and weight loss methods, are suitable for liposuction. There is no age bar. However, a younger person is better as he will have better skin elasticity and could gain better results. People having cellulite and stretch marks should not go for liposuction as the skin irregularities may result after the treatment. Liposuction can lead to diabetic complications. Liposuction can also bring certain side effects. Bruising, swelling, scarring, pain and numbness are some of them. After the surgery, there is a risk of infection. A blood clot called as pulmonary thromboembolism can also be a major side effect. A doctor does not suggest too much liposuction at once. There are many sessions having three to four weeks gap in-between.
Liposuction Procedure
Depending on the liposuction techniques and the amount of fat to be removed, the procedure can be done at the clinic or at the hospital. The procedure begins by giving local anesthesia which varies depending on the amount of fat to be removed. The liposuction procedure is done using suction equipment attached to a small, stainless steel instrument called a cannula. The cannual is inserted into fatty areas between skin and muscle through small openings. This cannula removes excess fat using suction pump or a large syringe, which leads to smoother, improved body contour. Some of the liposuction techniques are tumescent liposuction involving fluid injection, the super-wet technique and ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL).
