Are you curious as to why so many individuals are turning to the method that Joseph Pilates, designed called the Pilates method? Perhaps if we understood why people would do something, we may find a reason to join them? It turns out, that if you investigate forums and fitness clubs speaking with those who frequent these places you will find a wide range of reason for why people participate in Pilates classes or buy Pilates tapes and books in order to practice the Pilates method in the comfort of their own homes.

Many have admitted to starting the method as a way to recuperate from a sports injury or to prepare for the start of a new sport season. Pilates is known for strengthening the spine. And as most of us remember from high school biology, the spine is the backbone of the human body. If the spine is weak, so is the body. A strong spine equals a strong body. The spine has two main functions in the body. The first function of the spine is to be rigid and to withstand the twisting and turning that we humans demand of our bodies while we play sports, perform tasks at work and at home. The second task the spine has is to be flexible when the body experiences an impact so as to avoid injury to the spinal cord, which is one of the life forces within our body. This risk of injury increases as our spine becomes less rigid and less flexible with the passage of time (as we age). Those who practice the Pilates method understand that the exercises are designed to strengthen the spine.

There are also those who appreciate the mental component of the Pilates method. Pilates is more than just movements, they are “purposeful” movements. This purpose necessitates thinking, which is a mental exercise. The completion of correct exercise form requires a mental presence. While participating in a Pilates class, watching a Pilates tape or reading a book about Pilates the student learns to be aware of each body movement and how that movement contributes to core strength within the body. The eight principals of Pilates are taught, and understood so they can be applied when learning how to do the exercises. The eight principals are what make Pilates different from any other exercise program.

The eight principals involve controlling your movements, breathing correctly throughout each movement, creating a flow to each movement, having precision of movement, learning how to center while performing each movement, and creating a stability within the body as you move the body through using range of motion and opposition.

Others use Pilates because they hear that those who practice the exercises can experience great sex as they learn how to be more aware of their body and discover how to isolate muscle groups including those of the pelvic floor which can lead to greater sexual pleasures while giving individuals greater control during sexual encounters. Pilates allows those who practice the method to learn how to have better control over movements and to have better physical endurance during the sexual act. Learning the Pilates method can also prevent injuries if you prefer more athletic sexual experiences.
