Medically X-rays are used for Diagnostic imaging. An X-ray is produced when an interaction occurs between the high speed electrons and atoms of the anode, when energy is supplied. The X-rays are emitted with the help of an X-ray machine and the radiation only occurs at the time of exposure. This article will help you understand the intricacies of an x-ray procedure.
An X-ray is produced with the help of a tube, which is focused on the body part to be diagnosed. The X-ray machine has the ability to produce minute bursts of radiation, which are allowed to pass through your body and are recorded as an image on a specialized plate or image film. This procedure is completely safe and does not have any side effects on the person’s body.
A clear image is obtained because the different tissues are said to absorb different amounts of the radiations. Therefore different radiation exposure levels are created on the X-ray Film. For example, your bones absorb the greater radiations as they are dense and therefore they appear very light of the X-ray image. On the contrary, all the muscles, organs and the fats in your body and the skin are made up of soft tissue and therefore are less dense, that helps in passing more radiation through them. This results in an image with more grey shades. The image appears darker for the parts that consist of air like your lungs.
There is a proper X-ray procedure, which is followed by the technicians. The person is allowed to sit, stand or sleep depending upon the part to the X-rayed. The X-ray machine is positioned over the part to be X-rayed and sees to it that the remaining part of your body is covered properly with the apron to avoid un-necessary exposure. One needs to hold his breath while an X-ray is being taken and avoid movement. In all, the entire X-ray procedure requires only few minutes.
X-rays of the different body parts can be taken, as small as for your teeth known as dental X-rays. Now a days instead of the films, digital X-rays are in use where a digital image is recorded with the help of electronic sensors.
