X-ray technician is also referred as a radiographer who produces X-rays film of parts of human body for diagnosing medical problems.
X-ray technician prepare patients for these X-ray examination first they explain patient the procedure, then ask patient to remove jewelry and other particles from which X-ray can not pass and positioning patient so as to get appropriate X-ray. When technician are working with X-ray heavy exposure to radiation could be hazardous for X-ray technician. To prevent unnecessary exposure exposed are is surrounded by radiation protection devices such as lead shield that can limit the size of X-ray beam. Radiographer or X-ray technician sets X-ray equipment at correct angle and height over appropriate area of patient’s body. X-ray technician also has to set controls of X-ray machine to get X-ray film of appropriate density, contrast and other details. After all set up, it is important to place X-ray film under the part of patient’s body to be examined and expose the specific body part to X-rays. Then they have to remove the film and develop it. It is very important for any X-ray technician to follow physician’s order precisely and they must take precautions to protect themselves and patients from unnecessary exposure.
Sometimes for some specialized X-rays, technicians may have to perform complex imaging procedures. For example in fluoroscopes, X-ray technician has to prepare contrast medium for patient to drink, so physician can see tissues in the body.
For any X-ray technician physical stamina is very important since they are on their feet for long time and may have lift or turn patient especially in case of disabled patients. If patient is very serious or cannot move from bed then X-ray technician may have to perform procedure near patient’s bedside.
Many universities and institutes offer diploma, certificate and degree course for formal training in radiography. Duration of course can vary from 1 to 4 years. With experience and additional training X-ray technician can even become specialist who can perform CT scanning, angiography and MR scanning. With some additional education and certification, X-ray technician can even become radiologist assistant.
